Don't Likea Ikea

Well, it is not that I actually don't like Ikea. The prices are good and the products are unique. Its more of the nightmare of walking through the never ending maze with LOTS of opportunities to buy more stuff you don't need. And lets not forget the assembly part. Getting a bedroom set for the kids can be an all night affair.
The founder, Ingvar Kamprad grew up in a farm called Elmtaryd in the county of Agunnaryd Sweden. What do those letters spell? Oh yeah, Ingvar is the 7th richest man on the planet too.
He has a great quote: "To design a desk which may cost $1,000 is easy for a furniture designer, but to design a functional and good desk which shall cost $50 can only be done by the very best."

I don't like assembling some of their stuff, but it sure works well.

Many moons ago, well before Ikea was in Portland, Donna went up to Seattle to buy an entertainment center. She strapped it on top of the car and drove back in the pouring rain. The cardboard got wet and soggy, and started to tear in the wind. When the cardboard deteriorated enough, the straps were no longer tight enough to hold the thing on the roof, and it flew off on I-5 doing 60mph. Some pieces got ran over, others were salvaged.

When Donna brought it home, we assembled what was still okay, and brought the unusable (i.e. busted up) pieces back up to Ikea to hopefully buy replacements. The girl at the counter took the model number, went behind the door for a few minutes, and brought back with her EVERY part we needed, free of charge. Cool.
